Theo started the morning with the high school students continuing on their art project. They are learning to paint with acrylics on cork paper. They are just loving the class. We are hoping to be able to sell some of the artwork either locally or in Canada. The students will receive all the money raised. They are painting market scenes, butterflies and flowers.

While this was happening we had the computers set up with an interactive English CD. One student was there for an hour and a half. This is really amazing as this student is not really studious ,,,,,but he loved interacting with the computer program.

Several students were using the internet and photocopier to do research. Without this service the students have to pay to go into Santiago, pay for computer time at an internet cafĂ© and then pay for photocopying…..these costs are often why a student has to quit middle school.

Last year the students in the middle school made cribbage boards in their wood working class. This is a great project as it uses little wood but lots of tools. The students used a circular saw to cut off their piece of wood. A jigsaw to cut the wood into a number 29. A palm sander to smooth and finish the wood and then a drill to cut the holes. I had never seen the finished projects and I was totally amazed at how wonderful they were. However the students had not learned how to play cribbage.

Today was the day we started. We taught 9 students in the morning to play the second half of the game of cribbage ( we did not want to overwhelm the students with too much info at one time). In the afternoon we used those students to help us teach the 28 second year basico students.

By the end of the class we had some students as big fan of the game. We were able to give every student a pack of playing cards thanks to the ” Great Canadian Casino” in Nanaimo. The students used wooded matches as the pegs.

The social studies teacher is amazing. His classes cover topics like poverty, rape, violence, environmental issues. There is a lot of debating and oral presentations. Here is Abraham teaching the students their National Anthem. …to be added in the next few days
