The group arrived safely in Guatemala in the middle of Semana Santa…Holy Week. We had planned on shopping in the capital for sewing fabric for Home Econimics classes but alas many stores were closed. This however was not a complete loss as the volunteers enjoyed checking out the city.

We then headed to Antigua. Antigua is world famous for it’s Semana Santa celebrations. Theo and Eileen spent the next 3 days there enjoying the festivities. I will get them to add their stories and pictures.

I headed to Santiago Atitlan with Jaime. On the road I found out that most of the locals head down the road we were taking. It took almost 4 hours to travel 5 miles!!!! The traffic was insane with buses passing on the shoulder at a 45 degree angle. One bus crossed the meridian and decided to head down the highway on the wrong side of the road. You can see why there are soooo many accidents in Chicken Buses.

On the Thursday we headed to Chuk Muk to visit families and give out letters from sponsors as well as small gifts. The 2 boys that received soccer balls were thrilled. My own sponsor student, Lisandro, and his brother, Geraldo, had asked me for second hand soccer boots. The boys ( and girls) love playing soccer and usually kill their school gym shoes playing with their friends. I was able to snag 3 pairs of soccer shoes from the SOS and hoped I had the correct fit. Lisandro was tickled pink to not only get a pair but they are the type Messi wears. Thankfully I had a pair for his brother as well. These students lead a hard life and a wee gift brings such joy.

We also visited some of our Carrera ( high school) students  Eight girls wanting to open their own bakery. We have raised a lot of the money for a stove. I brought them down items like measuring cups, good cookie sheet and muffin tins. They also received cookie cutters from their sponsor. Jaime is going to sit down with the girls and work out a business plan.

One of the families we visited is a new sponsor student, Nicolas. They are dirt poor. We were able to get the family a energy efficient wood burning stove on our last trip. I had at that time noticed a complete lack of any supplies. Well when we visited this time I checked the kitchen closer to find Concepcion, Nicolas’s single mom. Only owned 2 pots and 2 forks. I asked her what she thought she needed most and she said they have nothing to sit on. I also noticed that she slept on a small blanket on the ground.

Well the group headed to the market and was able to buy to plastic chairs as well as 2 plates, 2 bowls, 3 spoons, a cutting knife, cutting board, 2 ceramic mugs, a juice container and 4 plastic cups. Thank you Jean for making this possible and giving an early Christmas to this family.

One of the big advantages to walking through the village and asking the students how they are doing is you find out if students are struggling in school. We found out that the students studying sciences are having difficulty in physics and statistics. We are now setting up tutoring sessions with Jaime.
