The following 10 students all participated in a supplementary art class offered this January.  Three two-hour classes were held per week for three weeks. The students were selected by their school art teacher as being some of the most promising. Their  families all lost their homes in the mudslide of 2005. After living in a refugee camp for two to six years, they were moved to the new village of Chukmuk, where each house has just three rooms and a small garden area. They all speak the local language, Tzutujil, as well as Spanish.
School hours are from 2 pm to 7 pm, but a student’s day usually begins very early in the morning. Most of the boys go out to cut pine wood on the mountainside to sell and also to use at home in the outdoor cook-stove. They usually leave by dawn so they have time to drive several hours to the mountainside and walk two hours up the mountain. They then cut the wood and carry it down on their backs. This way they are able to get work done and to school on time. They also do this on Saturdays. The girls spend their mornings helping their mothers with house chores, gardening, and beadwork to sell.  Their busy days also include doing homework in the evenings. Despite their tight schedule, the young artists were all very enthusiastic and grateful for the class.
