Went to Santiago today to try to fix the problem with the shoes….unfortunately the store was not open….will have to try tomorrow.
In the market I bumped into # 31 Heydi and #32 Dorcas. They were at the market buying food for their neighbours.They only had enough money to buy a few bread rolls. There is 4 children in this family and only a single mom. The dad was murdered about 3 years ago. I purchased some rice,beans and vegetables for them. This is one of the families that is getting a garden so we all jumped into a tuk tuk and headed to their house.
Dorcas received a papaya plant last year and it is doing well. It had a lot of very small papaya on it. They will probably be eating papayas in about 2 months.Dorcas is going to be in grade 3 again this year. I talked to the mom and it seems she was quite sick last year and missed a lot of school.
The older sister Juana had received a peach tree 2 tears ago and it had a bunch of tiny peaches on it.
We looked at the yard and there was only one place to put the garden. It has 2 large rocks in it that I hope my garden workers can remove. We talked about the price of the garden…4 keychains. They had no problem with the price and prepaid me.
We did however have a problem with the garden posts. The families need to supply these and they usually go into the mountains to get them. This family is made up of young girls.The family doesnot have the money to buy posts. We agreed that Juana would work with me for 2 days with projects in the school and ALDEA MAYA would purchase the posts.

Next stop was Estebans home. At Esteban’s home we ran into Geraldo…my sponsor childs younger brother. He then became my helper as I could not remember where # 63 Maria lived.Our next stop was her home. It was a real treck. It is amazing how my arthritis disappears here. In Canada I could barely walk and the doctors were telling me I would have to have feet surgery. We eventually found Maria. We decided on a location for a garden. Maria has a brother in law who is going to help in the putting in of the posts and the attaching of the wire. The the group of us trooped to # 26 Diego’s home. His dad Pedro is one of our garden workers.The 2 men then coordinated when they would work on this garden.
Pedro lives next to his sister. She is a single mom with one daughter. This family is also getting a garden. # 8 Maria lives in this house and is one of our Basico students. Pedro received a bicycle and needs to give me one day of work. These 2 gardens will make up this work. ALDEA MAYA is trying to get away from handouts as they cause to many problem.
Next we visited #33 Miriam as well as #10 Francisco and #12 Susana. These familes are working on the breast cancer angels. They are looking really good. I hope that we are able to sell a gazzzilion of them as it would help 2 worthwhile causes.
Susana’s family is also getting a garden but they have not started on theirs yet. We can not really get going on the gardens until we get alot more organic compost. We should be getting that on Wednesday.
