Spent the morning at the Mayan Families River House trying to locate a foot measurer. It was like looking for a needle in a haystack. I gave up after an hour. I will just have to make my own foot measurer so that I can figure out what size shoes to order for the grade one students.

Checked into a hotel in Santiago. Tonight is the opening ceremony for the Basico that ALDEA MAYA is opening in Chukumuk. The boats only run until 4 so I would be unable to return to Panajache and need to stay in a hotel.

The Basico now has 42 students, which is totally amazing. We have students that graduated grade six several years ago but could not afford the transportation, now  attending this school. This has all been made possible by the selling of  Christmas cards and beadwork as well as some very generous donations.

At the ceremony, the stage was set up and all the dignitaries were seated on the stage. They insisted that I sit up there as well. The whole time I was thinking PLEASE do not ask me to talk. The ceremony was really long. They just love to give speeches. The speeches had to be given in 2 languages and one of them was not English. As a result I did not understand most of the ceremony but did hear my name numerous times….so I just sat there smiling.

By the time the ceremony ended it was dark. Myself and 7 of the teachers walked out to the main road to wait for a passing vehicle to pick us up.While we stood there for half an hour we were joking around. The teachers are an awesome bunch of people that just love to laugh. They asked me if there was any way we could continue the evening with a hamburger. They of course could not afford this.I checked how much money I had and we decided that I had enough to treat them.

We had a great meal with them all wanting to take pictures with me.After the meal 2 of the teachers accompanied me in the tuk tuk to my hotel and even walked me to my room door to make sure I arrived there safely.
