Pedro has been very ill for over 6 years. He had to quit high school in his last year as he was finding it too painful to walk. He did eventually go back and finish high school. He then worked really hard and got a San Carlos Scholarship to study education. Pedro had many misdiagnosis before they decided that he needed his hip replaced. Unfortunately this is a very expensive surgery that our wee organization could not afford to cover. Luckily for Pedro there is a wonderful group in Santiago Atitlan that works with mentally and physically disabled people called ADISA. ADISA has been helping Pedro for many years with physiotherapy and they were instrumental in coordinating Pedro meeting a group called FUNDAORTA.

It has taken over 3 years to find a orthopedic surgeon and an anesthesiologist to perform Pedro’s surgery for free. Over the last 3 years Pedro has had numerous trips to Guatemala City to meet specialists, have Xrays and blood work. Our manager, Jaime, has gotten up at 2 in the morning to take Pedro to the city many times. Pedro had his life changing surgery on July 17.

However before the surgery we had to take him and 3 of his brothers to Guatemala City as we had to have someone donate blood for his surgery. Luckily one brother was a match.

We would like to thank the Watts and Parson families for making donations to cover the extra costs which so far have come to over $2,000. I cannot wait to see Pedro run again. Pedro has been sponsored by Aldea Maya since 2008.
