Today was a day of sadness and hope. Our first stop was a Josue’s house.

Josue is a 4 year old boy whom is severely malnourished. He is wasting away and losing his hair. His 22 year old single mom has 3 children under 5 years of age.

The saddest thing about this situation is that he was a healthy boy when he was breast fed. Since that time, he has been drinking unsafe water and consuming minimal food. His mother is in Pueblo a Pueblo’s wonderful mothers program. PaP approached us to see if we could help to come up with a possible solution.

Our first step is to get the family a water filter, which was donated by Sheila Norris. Aldea Maya does not believe in handout, therefore a family member will give us a day of work in exchange for the filter. Our next step is to see if we can get the child into the preschool.  The preschool gives a daily snack which will help feed Josue. Presently his older sister brings home part of her snack to feed her brother…..how sad is that. Finally we are going to work on getting the family a vege/fruit garden. We will be focusing on highly nutritious, fast growing plants: chaya, bananas, papaya, sweet potatoes and citrus trees.Tomorrow all 4 women that live in the house will be taking our chaya class.  We are going to set it up so that the family will receive weekly chaya leaves for 6 months until the chaya tree starts producing.

Luckily one of the other children in the house received a banana plant last year and it will soon start to produce fruit.

We continues through the village visiting families. This is Tomas with a letter and picture from his sponsor. You can see 2 hand woven blankets that his sponsor, Maggie, made. Back at our office we started to hand out water filters. These filters are so important as they ensure that a family consumes safe, clean water for one year. But a further benefit is that the family can save money and reduce the litter from all the plastic water bags.

When we visited the Basico we had a wonderful surprise, 3 of our first year students from 2012 were doing their practicum at the Basico. Marvin, Vicente and Manual are all in their last year of high school studying sciences. None of these boys would have continued past grade 6 if we had not started the Basico AND now they are graduating high school….something that less than 1% do in Guatemala.
