January 5th was not a great day, a drunk off duty police officer murdered a store owner for not giving him free alcohol. There was civil unrest as the community was upset and mad. A police car was burned etc. Luckily by the afternoon everything was back to normal.

January 6th we spent the morning working in the school garden. Diego is only 18 and is learning about gardens, composting, seed collection etc. It was great to see that a lot of our organic composters were full of lovely rich soil. We have a lot of chaya growing and are going to start incorporating this into the school meal program.

We also checked out the school kitchen as we have a couple of donations to help fix the massive problems in this room. The mothers are cooking on huge open fires. The danger from these is incredible as a child could fall into one of the fires or a women’s long skirt could catch fire. The room is also filled with smoke. The workers are crying and coughing most of the time.

We met with the teachers and started planning for the upcoming years garden program. We need to have more teacher /student involvement. We are starting with a program on the difference between organic and inorganic.

Here we are talking to a student sponsor mom. She is going to start growing AMARANTH on her land in Panabaj. AMARANTH is a highly nutritious sudograin that will be our next big project.

We visited Pamela in her home. Pamela is going to be studying to be a physical education teacher. This is very expensive as she has to live in another community to study. We can only help Pamela because her mom has a cleaning job and can pick up the costs that sponsorship does not cover. This picture of Pamela is in front of her papaya plant, mandarin tree and chaya. These plant are all from Aldea Maya school programs.
