Today we rented a truck and drove the long, windy, bumpy, picturesque road to Panajachel.

The volunteers stood in the back of the pick up for the one and a half hour drive…loving every minute of it.

We had a wee problem in the beginning as they locking gas cap would not unlock but Jaime managed to get it free after 20 harrowing minutes!!!!!!

Our first stop was Jasmin’s home construction. The family heard we were coming and they took time of work and skipped school to give us hugs and to thank us for building them a home. We are partnering with Porch de Solomon on this project. They are a wonderful organization.

We left our 4 volunteers at the site. They were given the job of leveling the dirt and stone floor before the cement is poured. It was intended to be a whole day job…however our volunteers kicked butt and finished it in half a day. Those 4 girls really wanted shopping time in Pana.

We met up with Maria Isabel Ramos to purchase bead work from her. She is being sponsored in University by Aldea Maya and had made beautiful woven gifts for her 3 sponsors. We buy from source and Maria Isabel’s lovely beadwork  will be sold at craft fairs and a Global Village stores.

We then went to Curtis’s Finca to pick up Chaya plants. Curtis very generously gave us 100 Chaya plants for free. We gave some to Porch de Solomon. We also organized for Linda and     to come to Chuk Muk on Tuesday to participate in our nutrition program.

We then drove home…leaving our volunteers for a lovely Saturday of visiting Graham in San Antonio Palopo and seeing the bed project, zip lining in the nature reserve and hanging by the pool.

We stopped in San Lucas Toliman at the main hotel there. They have a wonderful permaculture garden that has taken 4 years to develop. We had visited it 2 weeks earlier and had noticed no Chaya plants. We made a lovely trade…3 Chaya plants for numerous lemon grass plants, oregano, rosemary, basil, and flowering calendula which help keep bugs away. It was an awesome trade experience.

We stopped at the school to unload the plants with the help of the Basico students. They were really excited to see the Chaya plants and wanted to know if they were for them. We also had a suitcase full of jerseys and soccer balls from Ladysmith Rotary.
