Our expanding school garden

Today was the Alberta volunteers first full day in Chuk Muk. They got right to work on the school composters.

There is a HUGE PROBLEM with garbage in the village and many students do not know the difference between organic and inorganic. We are working on this problem by having each grade have their own composter.

Edith and Denise worked on making cement. This is not an easy job as we first had to sift the sandy area in the school yard to collect the sand. They were busy doing this when recess occurred…along came a bunch of elementary boys eager to help. Very quickly they went from labourers to supervisors.

Shirley and Audrey were on paint duty, painting all the front removable panels for the composter. Each grade will get to decoate the front of their composter.

Pedro and one of our high school students, Marvin, ( he was getting 3 hours of his volunteer time in) were working on the cement block structure.

This garden is made possible due to Lacombe Christian School donation and Ivy Turner’s Golf Event

At the same time:

A big group of Rotarians from Ladysmith arrived. Several of the group had visited in the last 2 years. It is a small world…two of the group John and Mary Mulrooney have a daughter, Ruth, that I taught with 20 years ago.

Anyways we gave them a brief tour of the school as they only had just over 2 hours….we were very happy they squeezed us into their busy schedule.

Today we worked with one of the grade 3 classes. Grade 3 students learn about Vitamin A and C. Vitamin A deficiency is a big problem in Guatemala. The government fortifies SUGAR with Vitamin A, as this is the only item it can guarantee the poor consume in any volume.

As a nutritionist I find this solution worrying and as a result we educate on healthy sources of the vitamin.

We bring in food from the market and explain which colour fruits and veges have the vitamin.

We then make a papaya smoothie with the group. We really appreciated the help from the Rotary volunteers as it is really hands on!!!!

The students will have more classes on the care of Papaya plants and will plant a papaya plant in the school garden which they will be responsible for.

We also showed the Rotary group our new piece of land. We will need to partner with several groups to start the construction of the woodworking room. We are no longer allowed to work in the elementary school yard and we badly need a safe location for our expensive wood working tools. We hope this building will also be used for a bed building project as many families have tons of children and only one or 2 beds.

We have started our pre-school garden project. The students are learning about composting and have a garden plot. We started by planting radishes. They just love radishes here’

Another reason we plant radishes is because they grow so fast…instant gratification in 21 days. This is important in young children
