Today we headed over to Chukumuk. As it is Sunday there is no school, however it is a perfect time to visit families.

Our first stop was the home of Cruz Ratzan. Cruz is a new sponsor student and we have never visited his home before. Cruz lives in Chukumuk 1. Initially Aldea Maya thought that all the people living in Chukumuk came originally from Panabaj. And were survivors of the Panabaj mudslide of 2005. However we always wondered why the homes in Chukumuk 1 were so different from the homes in Chukumuk 2,3 and 4.

The reason is the people in Chukumuk 1 are the survivors of the Pachichaj mudslide of 2005. Their homes were built by a different organization and are not nearly as nice or as big as the other homes in Chukumuk.

Cruz lives in Chukumuk 1. Cruz is in first year Basico and is very small. His growth was severly stunted when he was younger. However he is very smart and wants to be a doctor when he is older. He lives with his mom, dad and 2 siblings. They are very poor. Before sponsorship Cruz was not attending Basico. They have 2 beds that are falling apart and Cruz sleeps on the cement floor. He is a lovely boy and is always smiling.

His sponsor sent money for the family and Cruz is so excited that he will be getting a bed.

We then continued walking through the village. The next family we visited was the home of Ana Barbara and Diego. Aldea Maya has been sponsoring this family for many years. This family is incredibly poor. For many years the father could not get a job. Last year he received a bike through our Christmas card program. He road daily to the town of Santiago on his new bike. He now has a job. The family also has a vegetable garden that they just planted.

Last year their water was cut off by the municipality as they had not paid their water bill in over a year. Aldea Maya bought a lot of beadwork from the mom and they then had the money to pay the whole bill!!!!!!

One of our families has started their own nursery. We now buy plants from them.

As we walked through the village seeing families, we were also putting in orders for bead work. The people receive very little if they sell their amazing work to a wholesaler. Aldea Maya pays them 5 times more profit.

A big advantage of walking through the village buying beadwork is that we get to meet the families in their homes and can see if anyone is having trouble. At one home the mom had had surgery 2 weeks ago. They went to the cheapest place. She now has a horrible infection. We are going to get the Mayan Families visiting medical group to look at her on Wednesday.
