In Chukumuk today we gave cooking classes to the other grade 5 class. The class is too big so we divided it into 2 groups. Chelsea did not show up so Shaleigh ran the 2 classes with her mother as assistant. I am told Ms. Rasa  ( Shaleigh’s home ec. teacher) would be amazed!!!!

The class was going awesome until the gas ran out in the stove. Luckily the woodburning stove had been used earlier for tortillas. We added more wood and cooked the frittatas Guatemalan style.

Shirley and her sister Edith were our construction workers. They worked with Angel to build the outer fencing of the chicken coop. Angel volunteered his time today as a thank you for getting a scholarship for nursing school.

The school guardian arrived with wood etc and a friend to build the chicken coop. This area will be used to teach the grade 5 students about care of chickens and to supply eggs to the school.

Davies Electric Qualicum Beach donated several power tools plus other tools. We are using them tons in our building projects.

Thank You Davies Electric!!!!!

I taught the other grade 5 class about the proper feeding of chickens. Bringing in food not to feed them like onion, garlic, green peppers ,oranges and avocados. Plus food to feed them. I explained about gullets and the need for chickens to eat small rocks. We are going to try to construct water feeders out of pop bottles that can hang above the ground.

The  grade 5 students are very excited and have started to bring in their key chains ( they pay 2 keychains for 2 chickens…we try not to have handouts but hand ups) and cardboard boxes to take the chickens home in.

One of our students in Basico 1, Bryan Jonathon, came over to ask what size my belt was…and what day I will be at school.  He is a lovely boy that would not be able to go to basico if Aldea Maya was not paying for supplies and fees.

Shirley fell in love with him and he now has full sponsorship!!!!!!

We went to the market to buy vegetable seeds and show Edith and Shirley the market.

In the evening we had 2 groups of local women come to my cabin to sell beadwork and other items they made.

The second group had a young girl whose father is a drunk. The other family has taken her into their home but can not afford to send her to Basico. They wanted to know if we could help. The school she will attend is in Santiago Atitlan. The group is going to see how much it will cost and get back to us. Edith may be able to help this young girl who only wants a chance to improve her life.
