Today headed to the Mayan Families office. Aldea Maya has 4 students in the village of San Jorge and we were going on an excersion with MF to visit them
Our first stop was at the elderly feeding center. Our sponsor student Alba is volunteering there. MF now has the students in Basico and Carrera do volunteer time as a payback for being sponsored. This is a wonderful program and is similar to what Aldea Maya is doing in our new Basico.
Alba has terribly rotten teath that her sponsor is paying to fix. We were hoping to get her to the next stage, partial denture. However she has 2 more teeth to be extracted. She had a job working as a nany in Solola for the school break so she was not able to get the teeth extracted. We are going to try to get them done for Easter break.
Buying beadwork from Sindi Lorena
Next we visited Sindi Lorena. She is no longer living with her dad. Which is awesomw as he was having her sleep in the old outhouse on a piece of board. She is living with her grandma and going to school. Unfortunately her brother and sister are still with the dad. He is not letting them go to school. One is in grade 2 and the other in grade 6. It is such a shame!!!!

We did however meet with her mom and dad. This is a family that really values education. Maria Isabel is in her last year of carrers and is class president. This family was doing great. Unfortunately her dad has herniated area in his spine. The family has taken out a huge loan to pay for all the MRI’s, Xrays and surgery. The father is starting to do better and hopefully he can return to working…but probably not the manual labour he was doing before.
Just so you know it is NOT all serious work…here is Laura and myself totally cracking up
Back at MF office we bumped into Teresa. Teresa is the mom of the boy we are helping in nursing college. She works 2 full time jobs to ensure her children receive a higher education. She was badly burned several years ago when a propane tank exploaded. She is now having to deal with terrible vericose veins. Unfortunately she can not take off time for surgery.
