Today we stayed in Panajachel and visited Mayan Families. It was great to see old friends. We met with Laura, the MF student coordinator, to discuss students in Chukumuk. We also had a meeting with Laura and Jasmin’s family. Jasmins family has been living on the charity of an uncle for several years. It is not a good or happy situation. The uncle had offered them land so they could build a home. However he has started drinking excessively and has changed his mind. He also has started to give alcohol to the 2 boys!!! The home is actually owned by the uncles son. This fellow has just gotten out of Jail and has told Jasmin’s family they must move out.
However Rosario, Jasmin’s mom, can not work due to herniated discs in her spine. To compound the problem Jasmin has Rheumatoid arthritis and needs medicine. We are hoping MF can help us find a solution…as paying her rent is not viable for the long term!!!!!
On a happier note we were able to get Jasmin a 3 month supply of medicine and buy her a corte ( traditional skirt) and faha( woven belt)
We also met with Diego and his mom. They had travelled over from Santiago as they were receiving a bike. This bike was purchased through Christmas card sales. The dad will have to give 2 full days of work in our school garden as payment for the bike. The father will use the bike to look for work and the family can use it to ride the 3 miles to Santiago to buy food. In both these instances they will not need to use money!!!

We next went to visit Curtis and show Rita his amazing organic farm. Curtis is a master gardener and a wealth of information. We now will have a cheap, bagged supply of cow manure. Curtis is also supplying Aldea Maya with free Chaya plants. These plants are nutritionally amazing and grow as much as 15 feet in a year. He also is going to help us test our soil and design the school garden.
