Holy Moly did Aldea Maya buy a lot of stuff today.

We went to Solola with Gaspar, the director of our new Basico, to purchase items for the new school. As it is our first year at the school we only have grade 7…..which is called first year Basico. Basico is grades 7,8 and 9…it is basically a junior high school.

We also found out that there is going to be 40 students at the Basico!!!!!

This is both really awesome news and not so awesome news. It is fantastic that that many students are continuing their studies. When you think that last January only 2 students were going on to basico. Not having to pay for transportation is a huge factor when your family is incredibly poor. The transportation costs are larger than the cost to go to school. The other contributing factor is that ALDEA MAYA is covering the costs of 19 students.

There now is soooo many students that there will have to be 2 classes. This means we will only have to buy 21 textbooks for each subject. One textbook for the teacher and 20 class set textbooks. Textbooks are expensive and we only raised enough money to buy 21.

The teachers are now going to be working twice as long. This works out at under $1 an hour not including prep time, marking time and transportation costs. This is not good and we will have to think of a way to raise money to pay the teachers more appropriately. These teachers had to go to University for 6 years!!!!!!

In Solola we bought 21 textbooks for Spanish,Math,Science,Socials and Accounting. We could only afford to buy teachers copies for the other 9 courses they take. We bought a projector. The Elementary School has 20 computers that we will be using, however presently they are unusable. They do not have working keyboards or any working mouses( mice). We therefore purchased 20 keyboards and 20 mice.

By now we had spent a ton of money but had not bought anything for the music program. We have the recorders that Qualicum Beach Middle School purchased last year but no other instruments. We could only afford to buy 3 guitars. Hopefullly in the future we can slowly add to this amount. If you play guitar you can make money playing in cafes for the tourists. Hey, if we ever get Kathy Dutton and her kids down here again maybe we can get a marimba.

In Panajachel we purchased 50 backpacks as tomorrow half the grade 1 class will get their backpack and new shoes. The pickup was heading to Chukumuk thus we loaded it up with the 2 microscopes that Vancouver Island University donated.

Without all the incredible support from the residents of Vancouver Island none of this would be possible. Keep buying the Christmas cards and beadwork and we can make miracles happen in the highlands of Guatemala.
