Headed back to Santiago in the boat. Before travelling on to Chuk Muk decided to visit some stores in Santiago and check out the prices on items like shovels, picks and rakes as we will need these items for our garden program. To buy 2 shovels, one rake and one pick it will cost $24. I also checked out several stores to see what seeds are available. Can buy lettuce, turnip, cabbage, round zucchini, cucumber, hot pepper, radish, tomato, cilantro, carrot, beet and celery seeds. Tomato and pepper seeds are expensive at up to 7 x the price of other seeds. None of these seeds are heritage seeds unfortunately they are all hybrids!! It will cost $32 per family to buy the seeds. We are planning on helping 6 new families receive vegetable gardens. We will also need to buy organic compost for each garden and wire. We may need to reduce the amount of seeds each family receives as we also have to give seeds to the 6 gardens from last year.

Then it was off in a tuk tuk to Chuk Muk.

Headed to the school were the teachers were in a meeting. Was able to talk to the teachers in the meeting and was invited to the inaugration ceremony at the school on Monday.

I met the teachers for the new pre-school that Mayan Families is starting in a week in Chuk Muk. She asked me if I could possibly buy play ground equipment for the new school…I am constantly asked to buy things!!!! I informed her that Aldea Maya was using it’s resourses towards the new Basico.

I then sat down with Gaspar, the Basico’s director and a teacher from last year. We have enough money to buy the backpack and school supplies for 10 students. We will also pay their monthly school fee. They found it very hard to chose 10 students out of the 31 who want to go to Basico. Initially they chose 4 students that were already sponsored by Aldea Maya…this is good as we know we are helping the neediest.

We chose 4 girls and 6 boys. Two of the girls are older sisters of students that Aldea Maya has sponsored. Several of the students had come to the school to register but did not have the $2 it cost. One of these students is Hilda. The director of the Primary school, David became really emotional when he found out we were helping Hilda. He said she is a lovely girl who wants to continue her studies but the family is sooo poor that no one thought it possible. I wish we could help all 31. We are at this time helping a total of 18 students.

We have to make sure we have enough money to purchase text books, other supplies plus pay the teachers salaries. The teacher’s salaries are very low. Each teacher will make about $48 per month. We may have to use the money from selling keychains next summer and give them a bonus at the end of the year.

Next my sponsor student, Lisandro, and I went walking around Chuk Muk looking for the houses of the 10 Basico students who now have assistance. In an hour we only found 2 students…Chuk Muk is massive with over 500 houses. Lisandro and his friend were going to visit the families on the weekend to help us out. Each boy is receiving a small fee for helping.

Gaspar and I then headed to Santiago to buy school supplies.

Back on the boat to Panajachel.Visited the Mayan Families office and met up with # 47 Alba. This young girl has very rotten teeth. Her sponsor has given me hundreds of dollars to get the teeth fixed. alba has now decided she does not want to get them fixed. Her older sister, who is only 15, never fixed her teeth and now does not have one tooth. Alba wants to be a lawyer when she grows up. We were trying to explain to her that no one will hire her if she has missing teeth and rotten teeth. I do not know if we convinced her.
