Today was totally awesome. We took the grade 7 class on a field trip to San Juan and San Pedro. We would love to thank Mary Ellen Campbell for her donation which  funded this excursion for the second year in a row. The majority of the students had never visited these 2 villages.

The next part of this educational adventure was a powerpoint presentation by the mayor of San Juan.  San Juan has been a spotlessly clean village for a number of years. The mayor explained to the students how much garbage is collected weekly in the village and how the pure volume of it is huge problem. To address this problem he has started a program to separate organic from inorganic in the last 2 months. It was an excellent presentation and got the students thinking about how dirty Chuk Muk is.

We then visited 2 of the artist cooperatives and discussed different styles of painting. At the second art studio the director informed us that he gives free art classes on Saturdays and Sundays. The student just has to pay for materials. This would be an amazing opportunity for some students.

The next stage in this epic journey is a 40 minute trek to the next village, San Pedro.  Whereas San Juan is clean and filled with art and traditions, San Pedro is filled with hippie tourists. We are visiting San Pedro because it is home to the University of Tz’utujil.
