There are numerous reasons for Aldea Maya’s focus on garden and nutrition projects.
First and foremost is that Guatemala has the 5th highest rate of chronic malnutrition in the world. 24% of the children under 5 are underweight. This statistic is for the whole country, however when one looks at the indigenous population the stats are considerably higher. One in 2 children under 5 are stunted. This irreversible condition results from continual malnutrition with repeated episodes of illness (UNICEF 1998).
This little girl, Andrea, is actually 13 years old. Her mother died when she was born and the family could not afford to feed her. Her older sister is 6 inches taller than the grandmother. Andrea has been in grade 1 for 3 years, malnutrition has caused her to have compromised short term memory. Malnutrition contributes to 48% of deaths in children under 5. The main diet in this area is corn, sugar, salt and sometimes beans. This diet is deficient in complete protein, vitamins and many essential micronutrients and minerals. This is reason we have constructed a school kitchen and purchased stoves, pots etc. for 2 schools. If the school has a kitchen the students often get a nutritious snack from the Government.
Guatemalan Mayans were severly deficient in Vitamin A until a few years ago. This does not mean that they are now eating nutritious Vitamin A containing foods, but rather that the Government now fortifies sugar with Vitamin A, however this high consumption of sugar has led to other health concerns. Many Mayan women consume poor diets during pregnancy, often deficient in Folate, and produce underweight infants. These children often do not consume nutritionally adequate food. This leads the child to being susceptible to illness and can hamper brain development.
Several factors exacerbate these problems
-poor nutrition knowledge -inadequate salaries- making $1/day -severe weather-causing drought or crop failure. Aldea Maya is actively working to increase nutrition knowledge. One of our members is a dietitian. We have been able to give relevant, practical knowledge to numerous women’s groups. These classes also include a cooking element.
Through our Christmas card sales we have been able to be active in the Chuk Muk school with garden, nutrition and cooking classes.
