Aldea Maya started it’s baby diaper project in 2013. It started due to our group trying to think of another project for our sewing lady Maria Morales. Maria lives in Panajachel, a tourist Mecca, and had the opportunity to purchase a piece of land for relatively cheap. Aldea Maya would help her purchase the land however she needed to contribute towards it. Maria was barely keeping her family a float. One illness in the family and they would go under. The idea that she may have the security of a piece of land was like being thrown a lifesaver when you are drowning.
For several years we had noticed the mom being soaked with pee from holding their babies. The mom’s usually tie a piece of cheesecloth around the baby’s bottom and put some article of clothing over it to keep it secure. Flannel, baby diaper looked like the answer to our prayers.
We had been given a box of old flannel diapers in Canada. Aldea Maya showed them to Maria and asked her to make them. Unlike our other sewing project, sanitary pads, we did not make them in Canada and develop the pattern. This would prove to be a costly mistake.
We then had a design a Mother’s day card for Guatemala at Arrowview Elementary School. We chose 4 winning cards, and printed and sold them to purchase baby diapers for a mom and baby in Guatemala.
We sold the cards for $25. Each mom was to receive 12 outer diapers and 15 inner liners. Maria started making the diapers. The diaper looked easy to make however Maria had to make her own bias tape for them out of flannel. These diapers used a ton of fabric and took hours to make one. At the end of the month she had only made 24 diapers. The inner part was too thick to dry without a electric dryer, especially in the rainy season. And you can no longer buy plastic pants…which do tend to lead towards diaper rash anyway.
Time for a rethink
We then started taking to new moms in Parksville and Qualicum. Checking out their state of the art baby diapers. Through trial and error we developed a washable, adjustable ( from new born to 2 year) flannel diaper outer using a waterproof, breathable fabric and flannel liner. We then tried it on numerous different sized babies to see how it worked and EUREKA it looked like we had come up with a waterproof, breathable, adjustable diaper system that was easy to sew.
We want to thank Marjorie Allen, Bev Philip, Lorraine Moran, and Gerri Cook for making the first set of proto type diapers.
With the help of 7 volunteers we came up with enough diapers for 13 babies in Chukumuk. Our goal is to have Maria make them, however we were not going to make the same mistake twice….we were going to see if the women liked them and used them before we set her off making them. During our trip to Guatemala in October 2013 we gave out the diaper sets, explained how to adjust them and how to clean them. We charged each mother one key chain for 3 adjustable outer liners and 12 double thickness, folding flannel inner liners.
