We are very excited to be starting the set up for our reusable flannel sanitary pad project. We are partnering with 2 groups. Our main partner is Pueblo a Pueblo a US charity that has been working in the Santiago Atitlan for many years. They have a fantastic health program for pregnant moms. They follow and assist the family until the child is 5 years old.
In the last week, they have been giving work shops to the 4 young ladies who will be operating the women’s health project.
Our 2 women in the project are Juana Maria and Ana. Here they are with the first pad they have made. They have learned to operate sewing machines, sergers and rotary cutters.
This project has so many wonderful attributes. First off it is sustainable. The local women running the program will be making the pads and selling them at a low cost. They will earn an income for their work. The pads last about 3 years before they need replacing. When they need replacing these women will be in the area so the women can get more pads. This project is not just about the pads.

The 4 women are trained as ambassadors of women’s health. They will become experts on how the male and female body works, on contraceptives, dealing with violence against women, basic self defence and care of the pads.
Until recently a lot of this information was taboo.
These 4 women will be teaching information that will drastically improve lives and give valuable new information to the local Tzu’tujil women. All of this information will be taught in work shops to the women getting the female menstruation products. The second group we are working with is Days For Girls. DFG is an Us charity group that developed the pads and programs. We have been chosen to set up a micro enterprise in the Santiago Atitlan area.
