Today 3 of us went over to Chukumuk in a loaded pick up truck. We had the 4 new tables for the Basico cooking and sewing program as well as 35 Chaya plants from Curtis’s organic garden. It is really expensive to hire a truck so you have to make sure it is full.It is a 2 hour drive on very bad roads to the village.
The first family we visited is going to get a new garden in the coming months. Sam is meeting these families and working out the best way to put in a garden. We are looking at putting in raised beds so the rains will not effect the plants. Sam is going to try square foot gardening to help increase the yield. This family is a grandma and her 2 grand children. The students are often very ill as they do not have a lot of food to eat. They are excited about getting fresh organic vegetables from their new garden. They really like that Sam is going to help them.
We had a large bottle of vitamins for this family. Hopefully Vilma will not be sick all year again. This is a family that we hope to get an onil stove for in the future as they cook on the ground. All the families we visited received a chaya plant.
We next visited a family that had a garden but the mom left the family and took the garden wire. You need wire to keep people from stealing your vegetables and to keep chickens and dogs out. This family also received a big bottle of vitamins for all the children in the family. As we visit the families we are organizing key chains to be made as we sold all our supply.
We continued visiting families to see how their garden were doing or to show Sam the next families to receive gardens. We visited some of the gardens Sam has been working on and they were doing great.

Several years ago we helped a family start a small store. We visited the store and could not believe how much it had grown. The family paid back the whole loan for the store and now has 2 refrigerators!!!
We visited one family and the girl Maria is in second year Basico. We asked how she is liking school. She said not too much. When we asked why she said because she could not see. We are going to get her checked out for glasses.
The next family we visited had an awesome garden but the mom was so ill. The family had taken out a loan to get her thyroid surgery 2 weeks ago. She cannot afford to go back to the doctor for a check up as it costs $100 to rent the truck.She is so very ill. We will be organizing help or transportation.
Luckily we talked to Mayan Families and they are bringing an eye doctor and a GP to Chukumuk next Wednesday. We will se what we can do for these 2 families.
We spent the afternoon visiting the Basico. It was awesome seeing all the students learning in the Aldea Maya Basico We .had brought Chaya plants for every new garden, old garden and for every student in second year Basico. This is an amazing plant that is called tree spinach. We will be teaching the students all about it and hope to have some time to do Chaya cooking classes in home economics.
We were able to see Cruz and give him a picture of his sponsor family. Cruz is so excited to be in school. He would NOT be able to attend school without sponsorship. His family is so poor. We are going to visit his home on Sunday morning and see what they need.
