Started today by hiring a truck in Chukumuk and buying the wood for posts. We can now start getting these projects under way.
Cristobal and one of the teachers finished making the soil sifters. Then Cristobal started working in the terrible soil in our first garden.
Initially we were going to help our sponsor student Lidia go to nursing school. Unfortunately she comes from a family that does not see the importance of education. They will not let her go as she has to travel far to school 3 times a week. This is such a terrible shame because in 3 years she would have a great job. Several people donated money to help her. Aldea Maya will use the money donated by Brent and Barbara to help a fellow that is in his second year of nursing school. Juan Angel’s mom works 2 full time jobs 6 days a week to enable her 4 children to follow their dreams. Eventually this eighteen year old boy wants to be a doctor.
We were able to hand out school supplies to one more Basico student. We now have 14 students sponsored by Aldea Maya in first year Basico and 32 students in second year Basico sponsored by Aldea Maya.
In total there are 74 students in Basico, 46 of those students are sponsored by Aldea Maya. 19 students are sponsored through Mayan Families and 13 of those students are also connected to Aldea Maya. Pueblo a Pueblo sponsors the remaining 8 students.

As an organization we should feel really proud as probably none of these students would be continuing their education past grade 6 if Aldea Maya had not started a Basico last year. However we would not have been able to start this Basico without all the work of the old Director David and the active parents group.
Here are 2 of our sponsor students in the elementary school. Telma sponsored by Vicki Dugas and Andrea Ramirez sponsored by Jeanine Krefting. Andrea is fifteen years old and she is a severe example of stunting due to acute malnutrition in the first five years of life.
We were also able to give backpacks to 2 siblings of our sponsor student Ana. Ana is sponsored by Makena Smith. Makena sent money so that we could help 2 of Ana’s siblings with school supplies. We did not have all the supplies they need so we will get them the rest in a few days.
When I returned to Panajachel my day was not over. I had lots of different visitors. One of them was Jasmin and her family. Jasmin has Rheumatoid arthritis. She is doing way better now that we were able to buy her more medicine. Her sponsor had bought her fabric for a corte, traditional skirt. Another one of our moms sewed it into the skirt and she wanted to show it to me. On Thursday we will need to buy Jasmin and Gladis a Guipil, traditional blouse. to complete the outfit!!!
