For several years Aldea Maya has been working a partnership with Rotary International and Mayan Families to distribute gravity feed water filters to families in the Lake Atitlan Area. The water filters are constructed of 2 plastic buckets sitting on each other. Inside the top bucket are 2 ceramic and carbon filters. If one fills the top container it takes 12 hours for the water to filter to the bottom container. The bottom container has a spigot for easy delivery of clean, safe water. After 2 years of constant use the ceramic filters need replacing.Until recently Rotary had a matching grant that allowed us to purchase the whole water filter for $15US instead of $50. The inside ceramic filters have always been $20 US each.Mayan Families has taken on the task of delivering the filters and explaining its function and care.
