When a primary school student in Chuk Muk heads off to school they are probably ill-equiped and hungry. At home Tzutujil ( a Mayan dialect) is spoken but at school the student studies in Spanish. Often families are so poor that they have to choose which child gets to attend school. Very few children continue past grade 6 as the families need them to earn money to help support the family and school fees etc. are an added burden. ChukMuk Middle School
In January 2012 Aldea Maya started a Basico in the village of Chukumuk. It is a community school. It was made possible due to the community forming a parents group and the director of the elementary school, David. The school is suppose to be a joint project between Aldea Maya, Chukumuk community and the government. To date the government of Guatemala has approved of the school but not contributed one cent. Mini Sponsorship- school fees
Every student that attends Basico (middle school) has to pay a conscription fee and a monthly fee. This money is sent to the Guatemalan Government and pays for the school Secretary, Director, 15 teachers salaries and legal documents. The Guatemalan Government pays very low salaries and Aldea Maya supplements the teachers and Directors pay. Free internet, Photocopying and tutoring
Aldea Maya offers free internet and photocopying to all the students attending the Chukumuk middle school and local high schools. Without this service the students would have to travel to Santiago Atitlan which costs money and time.
