Today was our very first day to collect seeds from the school garden. The lettuce, cilantro and broccoli plants had gone to seed.

Our first step was to help the grade 4 class turn recycled paper into seed envelopes.

We then went to the garden and showed the students how to collect the seeds.

We started with the broccoli as they are not too small. The students found this to be a great project and are excited to plant their seeds at home. We explained the importance of always letting one plant in your garden go to seed.

We also visited the families that have vegetable gardens and gave them some seed heads.

We then had a quick lesson on worms. We have a worm home. In this worm home we only put ripped up strips of paper. The students were able to see how the worms had turned the paper into lovely nutrient rich organic soil. I had a wonderful surprise today.
