Garbage is a huge problem in Chuk Muk. When locals have finished with a juice container or a bag of chips they just throw it on the ground. At the elementary school we are trying to combat this problem. One of the first steps is teaching the students the difference between organic and inorganic.

Jaime has come up with a great program where each class learns about worms: what they eat, what they produce, how they help the garden, what they need to live. The students will learn this information by learning about” Lorenzo Lombriz”.  The students will separate organic from inorganic and place the organics in their grade’s compost area.

The afternoon class was with young adults. It was great fun. We had the boys making the chaya tortillas. Boys do not make tortillas here and the girls thought this was hilarious. In the last 4 weeks over 60 people have had a nutrition and cooking class on chaya. All the people taking the class bought chaya cuttings from the teachers. The coop teachers are being paid minimum wage by Aldea Maya but by selling bags of chaya and cutting they are able to double their wages.
