Today we took 2 of our high school students on the boat to the other side of the lake to sign up for high school.

In Guatemala, you specialize in high school. In the Santiago area you can study to be a teacher, science teacher, sciences or business administration/ computers. In San Lucas Toliman, a village about 25 minutes away by pick up truck, offers different courses like mechanics. It also offers Saturday only high school for students 18 years old or older. This is good for students that have to work during the week.

We have one student, Cristobal, studying sciences in San Lucas Toliman. His family did not want him to go on in school….they wanted him to work collecting firewood. He really wanted to study and Saturday only school made everyone happy….but it is a lot of work as you get very little instruction time.

We were taking our new garden guy, Diego, to sign up for a one year high school program in Panajachel. He will be studying sciences on Saturdays. Diego’s dad died in October 2015. He now has the responsibility of bringing in money for his family. As a result he is needing only a Saturday program. He switched from business administration to sciences as he hopes to study agriculture when he completes high school. It is important to note that it costs twice as much to study on Saturdays plus you have the transportation costs.

The other student we have is Pamela. She is going to study in Sololá. She is going to be studying physical education. Sololá is very far away and she will have to live in Sololá. Luckily her school is free but we will be using the sponsorship money to help pay for her accommodation. It is a 3 year course. She is very excited. He mom has a job as a maid and can pick up the difference in the accommodation costs. It is great news for Pamela as very few students from the Santiago/ Chukumuk area study to be a PE teacher.
