Well I finally made it to Guatemala. One day late, 2 cancelled flights, one delayed flight , one hour on the runway in Dallas, a change of hotels, a lightening storm and Tropical Storm Patricia. I was so glad to see Jaime at the airport in Guatemala.

Today I visited the market in Santiago Atitlan to buy food for Pedro’s family. Pedro, our lovely garden guy, died of liver cancer last week. It is so sad. I spend several hours with the whole extended family. They are devastated by the loss of Pedro and are frantic, as this family has 6 children and they have no way to make any money. The mom is in our beading cooperative and makes some money from it. We really need to get some more big orders so we can help everyone in the cooperative make more money.

The family wants me to hire the eldest son, Diego, as my new garden guy. We are going to do this temporarily and see how it goes. He is 16 years old. He does however go to high school in the afternoon and will only be able to work a half day. He is a lovely boy and now has the pressure of supporting his family. We have to look at this seriously as he has no real garden knowledge. But he is smart and hardworking.

The second eldest son, Pedro, who is 15 years old, hoped to go to high school on Saturdays. Thus being able to work during the week. However you have to be 18 to do this. I did noticed his shoes were falling apart ,big time, and asked if he had another pair. He did not. We therefore went to Santiago and bought him a new pair. On the trip we discussed his life, how wonderful his dad was and how he was fortunate to have such a great father even if it was only for such a short time. How he needed to make sure that he did not let anger destroy his life. In a heart beat this families future has been drastically altered.

Over the last several years we have sent Pedro on many garden courses. Pedro was doing a wonderful job and we were set to expand our program. This very sad loss has set Aldea Maya’s garden program back several years.
