Today Edith reconnected with Ana Maria and decided to sponsor her in Basico in Santiago Atitlan. This young girl has no mother and her father is an alcoholic. Her and her sister have been taken in by another family. This family can not afford the cost of sending her to Basico.
It is really expensive in Santiago to go to Basico over $400 a year. It would be impossible for her to raise this money. This high cost ensures that only the wealthiest can send their children past grade 6.
We were able to give her her supplies from our Christmas card sales.
Shaleigh and Kristie went to several classrooms to play number bingo with the children. They had great fun and as their Spanish is improving they are now saying the numbers correctly.
Edith, Shirley and I gave the nutrition class about folic acid to the other grade 5. We showed all the folic acid containing foods we had bought in the market and then hid them away. We challenged the students to a memory game and had prizes for the students who could remember 14 or more folic acid containing foods.
We gave each student a picture handout as well and explained that they need to show it to their moms and sisters so they will eat folate rich foods and prevent cleft palate.
The class made a nummy citrus avocado salsa which they all thought was excellent.
Then the class collected their citrus trees and organic compost. This whole project is paid for by the Christmas card sales!!!!!
Another organization is going to buy shoes for all the students in the elementary school. We helped measure the students feet.
