Happy Valentines Day

The group headed early to Chukumuk were we met up with Julio and Roberto from Mayan Families. They had driven from Panajachel with a truck loaded with stoves, stove parts and a bed.

Our first stop was at Andrea Ramirez’s home. Her sponsor Gerri Cook had bought a stove for the family. They had been cooking on a piece of metal on the ground.

The group helped put the stove together in their NEW fancy gloves supplied by Edith and Shirley.

The new stove has a large metal top for big pots as well as tortillas and uses 30% of the wood that burning on the ground does. It is also safer and has a chimney which removes the smoke from the cooking area. This is really important as their are a lot of lung and eye problems with cooking the traditional way.

Our next stop was at the home of Jacoba, Pedro and Rigoberto. Jacoba’s sponsor had bought the family a new bed and stove. Prior to this all 4 children slept in one bed. The oldest being in highschool. The 2 youngest are super pleased about this new bed with mattress cover, sheets and crocheted blanket all donated by Shirley’s Alberta friends.

Our next 3 stops were to repair onil stoves. These are cement energy efficient stoves. These stoves are 5 years old and had been moved from the refugee camp. They were no longer energy efficient. Quite a few needed new chimneys as the metal is not high quality and eventually rusts.  We repaired Elena Sosof, Lea Concepcion and Rosa Cristina’s stoves.

Lea Concepcion’s granma lives next door and was making tortillas. The whole group tried making tortillas….it was not as easy as it looked.

We found out that Lea Concepcion was very ill. She has fever blisters on her lips. We gave the family money to take her to the doctor. Tomorrow we will buy her her medicine.

We then stopped for a well deserved lunch at Teresa’s home.

Loaded ourselves back in the truck to drive to Panabaj. This family of 9 received a stove. They were also cooking on a small piece of metal placed on rocks. The mom and one of the daughters have severe eye problems from the smoke.

We dropped of a soccer ball and pump from the sponsor of Antonio.

The group walked around the mudslide site and old refugee camp home.

We headed back to Chukumuk to drop off bags of organic compost and the remaining stove parts to 4 more families.
