Today was the first day at the primary school for our latest volunteers, Shaleigh and Kristie.

It is a national non violence day so the teachers put on a hilarious assembly with one of the teachers dressed as a baby.

Shaleigh is making the dry dirt easier to work with

We started the grade 4 classes making the mini greenhouses out of pop bottles. In previuos years this has not been a huge success as a project as the students did not completely understand the concept. We therefore are approaching it different this year. We have each class make 2 greenhouses and for the next 2 weeks they will collect classes will look after them and learn.

Shaleigh and Kristie went off to one of the grade 1 classes for Spanish number bingo. The kids had a blast and the teacher thought it was totally funny the way Kristie pronounced the numbers.

The garden is progressing slowly. The father and his 2 sons that we hired are working really hard to convert this rocky, dusty, hot area into a beautiful garden. The area had been used to make cement so it was difficult work to break it all up.

Visited the grade 3 classes to see if they had the plastic bags necessary for the organic dirt that comes with the papaya plants. Tomorrow the classes are having their nutrition talk on Vitamin A & C. Making papaya liquados and getting their papaya plants.

We then headed to the market in Santiago. Kristie and Shaleigh rode in the back of the pick up with all the teachers. They had a blast…this is so not something you would do in Canada!!!!

We bought the food necessary for tomorrow’s class. I then headed back to the Basico to measure all the Mayan Families sponsored boys for their school uniform.

On the way out of the village stopped at Ana Barbara’s home and gave her a necklace from her sponsor Kelyn John and his grandma. Norma. She was so excited as this family is dirt poor and a beautiful gift would normally never occur.
