The 2011 building project was to build a 3 bedroom cement home for a family of 7 in Santiago Atitlan.
The family had a one bedroom cement home that was partially destroyed by a mud and boulder slide in 2005. The family was left in a home with half a wall completely missing and another partially destroyed. It also had a huge hole in front that anyone entering the home had to shimmy around. The original house also was constructed without corner posts or rebar.
There were BIG problems in constructing a new house.Firstly the house was very inaccessible. All building materials had to be carried down a steep grass embankment, along a beach and then up a narrow steep rocky mountain path. We were able to hire some of our sponsor students and their family members as labourers. A couple of the moms put the men to shame. We paid them more than double what they would normally make.
The next big problem was making the site safer and bigger. The house is precariously situated on the side of the mountain. To make the site larger required moving huge boulders. Dozens of large rocks were manually moved to fill the 8 foot deep hole in front of the house. More were moved to enlarge the building space. Often it required splitting the boulders to fill up a space. Everyone was exhausted at the end of a days work. Jim Sosa lost 10 pounds in 2 weeks from all the manual labour.
The next step was construction which was dangerous as there was a massive drop off on 2 sides of the house.
We want to send out a special thank you to our 2 Mayan masons Don Julio and Eugene and M.F. project coordinator Juan. As well as, our other volunteers John Costello and Gene the Southwest pilot.
